Using himself as a lens, Jamal discusses how unique fears and trauma are a major defining aspect of the African American experience. Additionally, he talks about how emotional vulnerability might serve as a step towards empathy and understanding between people. Jamal Thorne is an Assistant Teaching Professor at Northeastern. Thorne is a Boston based artist, known for his use of the drawing medium to investigate and visualize the nature of performed identity. With massive drawings, Thorne blends references from popular culture, religious iconography, and symbolism in an attempt to create a possible image of what our multilayered identities could look like. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
