So often, we ask ourselves where we want to be in 5 years, or what our physical or vocational goals are for the new year. Just as important, but less commonly asked, are the questions: How do we want to be seen? How do we want to be identified? Through personal storytelling, Emmett walks through how his life changed when faced with these questions and invites you to reflect on your own gender journey. Emmett Smith is a professor of molecular biology at Earlham College. They enjoy reading, riding their horse, and working and traveling in Iceland. They have spent the past few years asking themself how they want to be seen and identified, leading to a surprising self-discovery. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
