In this Malayalam lecture, we cover the basic terms and levels of ecology, a crucial part of Environment and Ecology for competitive exams like UPSC Civil Services and KAS. Ecology forms the foundation for understanding how living and non-living components interact in nature, and mastering these concepts is essential for both Prelims and Mains. The session begins with a clear explanation of environment – including living (biotic) and non-living (abiotic) components. We learn how interactions between plants, animals, soil, air, and water form the basis of ecosystems. The video explains how physical factors (light, temperature, humidity), inorganic substances (oxygen, carbon dioxide, water), and organic substances (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids) combine to sustain life. We then move into key ecological terms such as: Ecology – the scientific study of relationships between organisms and their environment. Habitat – the natural ‘address’ of an organism. Ecosystem – interactions of producers, consumers, decomposers with abiotic factors. Ecotone – transition zones between ecosystems (e.g., mangroves) and the edge effect. Ecological Niche – the unique functional role of each species in an ecosystem. The lecture also explains the classification of ecosystems – natural (terrestrial and aquatic) and man-made. Terrestrial ecosystems include forests, grasslands, and deserts, while aquatic ecosystems include freshwater (lakes, rivers), marine (oceans), and brackish (estuaries, mangroves). This classification is vital for exam preparation. A detailed section is devoted to the levels of ecological organization: Individual – a single organism. Population – group of organisms of the same species. Community – different species living together, often named after the dominant species (e.g., grassland). Ecosystem – interaction between living and non-living components. Biome – large regions like tropical rainforest, desert, tundra. Biosphere – the global system where all ecosystems exist together. Special focus is given to producers (autotrophs like plants, algae, some bacteria), consumers (herbivores, carnivores, omnivores), and decomposers (fungi, bacteria) – the three pillars of ecosystem energy flow. By the end of this video, you will have a strong foundation in: Ecology basics in simple Malayalam. Differences between habitat, ecosystem, and biome. The importance of ecotones and how they support higher biodiversity. The concept of ecological niche and its role in species survival and conservation. The six levels of ecological organisation with examples. This class is designed to help aspirants of UPSC, KAS, and other competitive exams, as ecology is a high-weightage topic in both Prelims and Mains. 👉 Watch till the end for complete clarity and revise before moving to advanced topics in Environment & Ecology.
