How can we make AI systems understandable, trustworthy, and transparent? 🎤In this keynote, Professor David Barber delves into one of AI’s most pressing questions — how to explain the decisions made by complex deep learning models. Focusing on image-based applications such as medical imaging, he explores why interpretability is vital for both scientific discovery and public confidence, and outlines promising research directions toward more explainable and reliable AI. A leading scholar in Machine Learning and AI, Professor Barber is a Fellow of the Alan Turing Institute and co-leader of the Opensource Imaging Consortium, an international initiative using AI to improve CT-based lung disease diagnosis. His pioneering work on Bayesian methods, Gaussian Processes for Classification, and variational inference has shaped today’s deep learning approaches. He is also the author of the influential textbook Bayesian Reasoning and Machine Learning. 🎥 This keynote was presented at Data for Policy 2025 – Asia Pacific, held on 23–24 October 2025 at Tongji University, Shanghai, hosted by the Shanghai Research Institute for Intelligent Autonomous Systems. Under the theme “Advancing AI: Innovations, Governance, and Ethical Frontiers,” the event brought together leading researchers and industry experts from across the Asia-Pacific to explore how AI is reshaping governance, ethics, and society worldwide. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 🔔 Subscribe to our channel / @dataforpolicy for more expert discussions on AI policy, governance, and technology regulation.
