Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS) are a key technology for next-generation wireless networks, enabling precise control of electromagnetic waves for communication, sensing, and localization. Using programmable metasurfaces, RIS dynamically adjusts wave amplitude, phase, and polarization, supporting applications like high-speed data transmission, real-time health monitoring, and indoor positioning. It improves energy efficiency and signal coverage in Non-Line-of-Sight (NLoS) environments with minimal power consumption. RIS also enhances RF sensing for accurate heartbeat and respiration monitoring and boosts machine-learning-based indoor localization by reducing multipath fading. With strong potential in integrated sensing and communication (ISAC), RIS is set to revolutionize smart homes, healthcare, and urban connectivity. Speaker: Qammer H. Abbasi (SMIEEE, FRET, FRSA, FEAI, FIET) is a Professor of Applied Electromagnetics & Sensing at the James Watt School of Engineering, leading the Connecting People theme and directing the Communication Sensing and Imaging (CSI) Hub. He advises the UK Government's Department for Science, Innovation & Technology and manages a £13M+ grant portfolio. With 500+ publications, 11 books, and multiple awards, including the UK Exceptional Talent Endorsement, he has been featured by BBC, Scotland TV, and others. An IEEE Senior Member, he chairs the IEEE APS/MTT UK-Ireland-Scotland chapter, serves as an editor for IEEE journals, and holds several leadership roles in IEEE and IET.
