Helping Kids Build Arm Strength 💪🏽 | Broomstick Pull-Up Practice with Nickolas (Age 10) | Pediatric Physical Therapy (PT) with Amy Sturkey @pediatricPTexercises What a treat — you’ve found Nickolas and me working together again! Nickolas is a 10-year-old identical twin who was born at 33 weeks of gestation weighing just 3 lbs 14 oz. His twin brother was delivered by emergency C-section. Nickolas is status post-ventricular septal defect repair and has pulmonary stenosis and pulmonary insufficiency. He also has ADHD and significant learning disabilities in writing and math. His mother reports that he has difficulty with upper body strength and delayed gross motor skills compared to his peers. In this video, we’re focusing on pulling strength — something many children don’t get enough of because most activities focus on pushing instead. To make it fun and accessible, I use a simple household tool: a broomstick! 🧹 Nickolas practices “pull-ups” while lying on his back, pulling himself toward a sitting position while keeping his hips on the ground. This helps strengthen his arms, lats, and core — and even activates his neck flexors. 💡 Therapy focus: Building pulling strength for balanced upper-body development Encouraging core and neck engagement Teaching safe hand placement and movement control Providing easy home setup options with a broomstick or mop handle 🧠 Why it works: Children often need more opportunities for pulling to balance out their pushing strength. This exercise mimics the motion of a pull-up but in a safer, easier position on the floor. You can hold the stick or rest it across two chairs to make it hands-free for you as a caregiver or therapist. ⚠️ Safety & Supervision Reminder: Anytime you work on strengthening, make sure the area is clear, use padding as needed, and supervise closely. Use a sturdy broomstick and stable support so the exercise stays safe and fun. 🎥 Watch all of Nickolas’s videos (playlist): • Physical Therapy with Nickolas, a 10 year ... 🌐 More resources: Website: https://www.pediatricPTexercises.com Facebook: Pediatric Physical Therapy Exercises Email: amysturkey@gmail.com 📚 Books by Amy Sturkey (Amazon): Children’s Books: P is for Poop and Pee Accidents — https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0BLSRJ483 A is for Anxiety — https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09LXQ3W6V A is for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder — https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08QH9H5HR C is for Cerebral Palsy — https://www.amazon.com/dp/B088TSJCYP D is for Down Syndrome — https://www.amazon.com/dp/B079P8HH49 A is for Autism — https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071F4FFTB Professional PT Books: Pediatric Physical Therapy Strengthening Exercises for the Hips — https://www.amazon.com/dp/0998156736 Pediatric Physical Therapy Strengthening Exercises for the Knees — http://www.amazon.com/dp/0998156760 Pediatric Physical Therapy Strengthening Exercises for the Ankles — https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08TX2ZCFD 💬 Captions / Accessibility: I’ve reviewed and corrected the closed captions for this video to make it easier for viewers around the world to follow along.
