【Pls look at the top comment first】Russ Ballard is one of the most influential musicians in British rock industry in the past decades, whose careers can be dated back to 1960s. Since the late 1970s and all through the 1980s, Ballard has established good fame for songwriting. Before that, he was known as the lead vocalist and the guitarist of the English rock band Argent. Throughout Russ Ballard's careers, he is relatively a prolific musician, an gifted multi-talented singer, guitarist, songwriter, arranger and producer, whose most productive period was from the mid 1960s until the early 1980s. Before he started his solo careers in the mid 1970s, he had performed in various bands and projects. Speaking of Argent, the band had several singles on the chart. The first period of Argent once lasted from 1969 to 1976, featuring three members sharing the vocals and Russ Ballard on the main jobs for songwriting. One of the band's best known single "God Gave Rock And Roll To You" was written by Ballard, which was covered by Kiss as "God Gave Rock 'N' Roll To You II" in 1991 with modified lyrics. Russ Ballard left Argent in 1974 and pursued a solo and songwriting career. His solo debut was released in 1974 by Epic Records as his first self-titled album, featuring Ballard on various roles such as vocals, guitars, bass, keyboards/pianos, harmonica, drums and clavinet while a group of studio players performed on saxophones. Musically, his solo debut is a decent and neat classic pop and old-school pop rock release. As it is known by many music lovers, the old-school genre of rock music was very common and popular in the 1960s and the 1970s, which could last until the early 1980s with relatively simple arrangements and covered the range from progressive rock to pop rock. It was not until the early to the mid 1980s that the music genre from rock musicians gradually transferred to the 1980s mainstream style of hard/melodic rock as what we hear mostly and impressively. It is worth mentioning that a great deal of his compositions were hits for himself, which were included in his solo albums as well as for other artists during the 1970s and 1980s. Some of his original musical works were covered by other rock legends. Here the recommendation is his second self-titled album released in 1984. Compared to his first self-titled album (1974), this one includes real melodic rock stuffs. The album was distributed in numerous countries covering six continents. Recorded at Abbey Road Studios, London, this album was co-produced by Russ Ballard and John Stanley. There are eight tracks in the album, with the very notable hit "Voices". On the whole, this is a decent release, covering the typical mainstream features of 1980s aor. Compared to his former album "Into The Fire (1980)" with much harder taste in music, covering the early 1980s old-school hard rock essence, "Russ Ballard (1984)" seems to be a huge step for his musical creations as the glorious days of 1980s aor essence had come from the British legend Russ Ballard. Musically, this album contains most mid-tempo tracks, which were all created by Russ Ballard. The opening track "I Can't Hear You No More" and "In The Night" feature typical 1980s tunes. "Two Silhouettes" and "A Woman Like You" sound bright and lively in beats with splendid keys's penetration. Here we are hearing "Day To Day", my personal favourite, mid-tempo love theme with a sense of nostalgia. Don't forget the music video of "Voices", Ballard's big achievement. The superb hit "Voices" from the album was featured in the Miami Vice episode "Calderone's Return: Part 2 – Calderone's Demise", which aired on 26th October 1984. The song was a brief hit on rock radio stations, peaking at No.15 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart. However, "Voices" stalled below the Billboard Hot 100, only peaking at No.110. Another song from this album "In The Night" was featured in the episode "Calderone's Return: Part 1 – The Hit List". The show also featured "Your Time Is Gonna Come" by Ballard later in its run. Speaking of Ballard and Kiss, in addition to Kiss covering "God Gave Rock And Roll To You", retitled as "God Gave Rock 'n' Roll To You II", Peter Criss recorded Ballard's "Let Me Rock You" and "Some Kinda Hurricane" on his 1982 album "Let Me Rock You" and Ace Frehley covered "New York Groove" on his self-titled solo album in 1978, which reached No.13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. Ace Frehley's version of "New York Groove" also has been a regular staple of Kiss live performances, during tours in which Frehley has taken part. During his non-Kiss years, Frehley also recorded a cover of "Into The Night" for his 1987 album "Frehley's Comet", which is the tribute from one rock legend to another. Russ Ballard's musical activities have continued until present with his latest album "It's Good To Be Here" released in 2020, still featuring good condition on voice and on the tour in his seventies. #MelodicRock #aor #RussBallard
