October was one of the roughest months we’ve seen — nonstop storms, crashing waves, and a whole lot of murk. Visibility? Practically zero. But as we learned, what hides in the shadows can be the greatest scare of all. Out of the gloom came a massive hammerhead, appearing only feet from the camera — a true horror-movie moment straight from the deep. We finally captured our first mullet run on camera (about time!), followed by a huge school of bluefish — a rare sight since we’ve only spotted a lone bluefish years ago. Not long after came the spadefish, crevalle jack, and several old friends returning for the chaos: horse-eye jack, almaco jack, gray triggerfish, black margate, Irish pompano, and even a lobster holding tight against the rough current. Tiny larval porkfish drifted by in the currents, a mysterious jelly (maybe a cannonball?) floated through the gloom, and even a squid paid the camera a surprise visit. And just when we thought we’d seen it all — the ocean spun itself into an underwater vortex, swirling like a ghostly tornado below the pier. The water may have been dark and wild all month long… but if you look closely enough, you might notice we weren’t the only ones watching. 🎃 Happy Halloween Piers! #spinnertheseacam #Halloween #Hesstilldownthere Finds this month: Almaco/Amber (still can’t tell the difference) Atlantic Bumper Atlantic spadefish Bait Barracuda Bar jacks Black margate Blenny Blue runners Bluefish Blueheaded wrasse Brown chromis Burr Cero Chubs Crevalle jack Doctorfish Gray Triggerfish Grunts Hammerhead Horse-eye jack Irish Pompano Mojarra Jellyfish (cannonball??? & comb) Lobster Lookdowns Mangrove snapper Mullet Mojarra Nurse shark Ocean surgeonfish Orangespotted filefish Porcupine puffer Porgy Porkfish Queen angelfish - juvenile Regal demoiselle Remora (sharksucker) Scrawled cowfish Sergeant major Spot tail Snook Yellow jack Yellowtail parrotfish Water tornado/vortex Missing: Spanish hogfish, sheepshead, highhat, octopus, soapfish, dusky damsels, permit, pompano, planehead filefish, lemon shark, smooth trunk, grouper, rainbow parrotfish Fish Recap Series — Produced & Edited by @RJPcreations in partnership with the City of Deerfield Beach
