It’s been almost two months since we returned from Longyearbyen, Spitsbergen—an old coal mining town frozen in time at 77°N and wrapped in the endless darkness of polar night. No sunrise. No daylight. Just 24/7 night that completely throws off your body clock. You’re wide awake at 2 am and ready for bed by lunchtime… time becomes a blur! We braved harsh Arctic weather and ventured deep into the tundra landscape. Snowmobiling over a frozen river in total darkness was eerie, surreal, and a little unnerving. The silence was broken only by the hum of the engine and the crunch of ice beneath us. It felt like exploring another planet. Because it’s polar bear territory, we were always accompanied by a guide carrying a loaded rifle—constant awareness, constant readiness. Thankfully, no surprise bear encounters! Capturing this experience on camera was another challenge. Forget videos—just getting photos was tough. The images you see look bright, but only thanks to long exposures and a whole lot of patience. What we saw with our own eyes was far darker, moodier, and hauntingly beautiful. Still thawing out… but this Arctic adventure at the edge of the world will stay with me forever.
