After a wonderful time in Finland, we decided to skip the quick flight and take the Arctic Route bus from Rovaniemi to Tromsø, Norway. We thought it would be a great way to enjoy the beautiful Lapland and tundra landscapes at a slower pace. It was a full-day journey, but totally worth it! While planning this trip, I found a small village called Kilpisjärvi, right on the border of Finland, Sweden, and Norway. I came across a snowmobiling company there where kids over 15 can drive their own snowmobiles without a licence. The boys were excited, so we planned an overnight stop just for this. We arrived in Kilpisjärvi at around 5:00 pm. It was pitch dark and -31°C! We were worried about carrying our luggage in the freezing cold, but it wasn’t too bad—except for our red cheeks by the time we reached our accommodation. After checking in, we walked to the little town centre (which had just one shop and a petrol station), picked up some groceries, cooked dinner, and ended the night with a sauna. A perfect end to the day! The next morning, after a good sleep, the boys found the front of the house covered in fresh snow. They shoveled a path so we could carry our luggage out. Before checking out, we took a walk around the village and to a frozen lake. The snowy views were beautiful and so peaceful. At noon, our guide picked us up for the snowmobile tour I had booked from Australia. They gave us warm gear (it was -29°C!) and a quick safety briefing. Then we were off! This was the boys’ first time riding snowmobiles on their own, and they loved it. As we rode across the frozen lake, we saw beautiful stratospheric clouds, also known as mother-of-pearl clouds, shining in the sky. Soon, we reached the famous three-country border where Finland, Sweden, and Norway meet. We crossed back and forth over the borders a few times, just for fun! After a warm drink of traditional Finnish gløgg and some sweets, we rode the snowmobiles back to the village as it got dark. It was tricky riding in the dark, but a great experience. Back in Kilpisjärvi, we changed clothes and made our way to the bus station to catch the bus to Tromsø. We arrived at our Airbnb, ready for the next part of our adventure—Svalbard, the northernmost inhabited island in the world! What an unforgettable journey so far! #kilpissafarit #Kilpisjarvi
