The loss of Cornish semaphore outposts at Par, Lostwithiel and Truro back in March 2024 has left just two main line locations in the Royal Duchy that are still mechanically-signalled. This video begins at St Erth Station, a delightful and immaculately maintained Grade Il Listed station, where semaphore signalling helps retain the historic air of this busy country station. The central part of the video features clips of GWR Castle Class HST’s at various locations across Cornwall. It’s hard to believe that by the end of 2025 these long-distance High Speed Trains will have made their final journeys on the GWR network. Like many hundreds of enthusiasts, I have thoroughly enjoyed photographing, filming, and riding on these wonderful trains over the years. For me, nothing will ever be as good as the ride you get on an HST Set. Few trains truly reach a legendary status but there can be no doubt that the Inter-City 125 HST was, and still is, an icon in the age of the railway. The final part of the video comes from Liskeard Station which along with St Erth Station has retained semaphore signalling for now. Semaphore Signalling and HST’s have been very much a part of the railway scene in the UK for as long ago as I can remember so it is very much a case of cherish them while you can.
