🔥 GI Disorders You MUST Know for the NCLEX: PUD, Dumping Syndrome, & Celiac Disease 🌡️ 1. Peptic Ulcer Disease (PUD) Patho: Breakdown of the gastric/duodenal mucosa → acid + H. pylori cause burning epigastric pain. Diet to Treat: • Small, frequent meals • Avoid spicy foods, caffeine, alcohol, NSAIDs, chocolate, soda • Stop smoking NCLEX Tips: • Priority = assess for rigid abdomen, sudden severe pain → perforation (emergency!) • H. pylori treatment = triple therapy (2 antibiotics + PPI) • Teach: Avoid eating 2 hours before bed. ⚡️ 2. Dumping Syndrome (often after gastric surgery) Patho: Stomach empties too quickly → fluid shift → hypoglycemia + cramping + diarrhea. Diet to Treat: • High protein, high fat • Low carbs and NO simple sugars • Eat small meals • Lie down after eating to slow gastric emptying NCLEX Tips: • Avoid fluids with meals — drink 30–60 minutes before or after. • Watch for dizziness, sweating, tachycardia → early dumping. 🌾 3. Celiac Disease Patho: Autoimmune reaction to gluten → destroys villi → malabsorption of nutrients. Diet to Treat: • 100% gluten-FREE (LIFELONG) • Avoid: Wheat, barley, rye • Safe: Rice, corn, quinoa, potatoes NCLEX Tips: • Monitor for anemia, weight loss, diarrhea — malabsorption signs. • Oats are only safe if labeled gluten-free due to cross-contamination. • Teach: “Even a small amount of gluten causes damage.” ✨ Save this! These three show up everywhere on the NCLEX — especially in prioritization, diet teaching, and patho-based questions. Hope this helps and reshare to help out someone else.
