This magnificent - but dishevelled - building is Oldway Mansion (with its accompanying circular performance arena). Once known by its owner as 'The Wigwam'. It was all created for a certain Isaac Merrit Singer, creator of the well-known sewing machine, and the founder of the world-famous Singer Sewing Machine Company. Following some... err, let's say "personal" difficulties, Isaac left America under something of a cloud, moving to Devon in the UK around 1870. He remained there for the rest of his life, most of it spent here, in his 110 room mansion. Paris Singer, one of Isaac's many sons, bought out his brothers' interests, some time after Isaac's death, and had it remodelled around 1906 to resemble the style of the Palace of Versailles. The result, as I think you'll agree, is a truly impressive building. Paris himself eventually returned to the US in 1917, and the estate - after various interim uses - was eventually purchased by the local council in 1946. It's claimed the sale price was far below its market value, in order ensure the future of the building, and to provide a public amenity to the local population. To be fair, the council retained it in everyday use until 2007, when they stated they could no longer afford its upkeep. They quickly closed and boarded up the buildings, leaving only the grounds still available to the public. Since a development company's private scheme for the mansion fell through, the building has been left to deteriorate, and it's currently classed as 'unsafe' - hence the unsightly metal fencing around it's perimeter. As nothing is being done - or even being planned to be done - to save the building, I fear we may soon lose it. Perhaps it will end up replaced by some concrete and glass monstrosity after a mysterious fire. It seems quite a common fate for old buildings in the area. I truly hope I'm wrong but, this isn't the only historical building in this area to be neglected in this way, and the future doesn't look optimistic in the current climate.
