SANTA MONICA, CA — Tuesday, July 22, 2025 — A high-speed police pursuit that began in South Los Angeles ended in a high-stakes confrontation at the entrance to the Santa Monica Pier, where a man was taken into custody by heavily armed LAPD officers. The pursuit began shortly after 12:30 p.m. when Los Angeles Police attempted to stop a suspect wanted for assault with a deadly weapon. The driver fled in a silver sedan, reaching speeds of up to 100 mph on the westbound 10 Freeway before exiting into downtown Santa Monica. As the pursuit neared the busy Ocean Avenue corridor, Santa Monica Police shut down the area between Broadway and Moomat Ahiko Way. Colorado Avenue was also closed between 2nd Street and Ocean Avenue. Near 1:00 p.m., the suspect came to a stop at the crosswalk near the pier entrance. Officers with rifles, less-lethal launchers, and ballistic shields approached the vehicle tactically as bystanders were cleared from the area. The suspect exited the car and surrendered face down on the pavement, hands spread, in view of multiple LAPD units and a tactical team staged behind cover. A small white dog was also in the vehicle and was retrieved by Santa Monica Animal Control and transported to the city’s shelter. No shots were fired. The coordinated response between LAPD and Santa Monica Police ensured the scene was secured quickly and without incident. The suspect’s identity has not yet been released. LAPD officials indicated they are familiar with his residence and continue to investigate the original assault case.
