Rich men, most times, are busy people., therefore, out of their busyness, they ignore some things. For instance, little pilfering might receive little attention from a rich man, this is not because they are negligent or wasteful but because they can have enough long rope for people around them to pull. However, oftentimes, people seeking favour or position from rich men can get them overwhelmed with unsolicited information and news. And because some rich men are rash, churlish and wicked like Nabal, they may not check for the veracity of such information before they pass their judgements. This is likely what played out in the case of Joseph with Potiphar. There was no record that the man did any investigation of the allegation levelled against Joseph by his wife before he sentenced Joseph to, possibly, life imprisonment! This is why those who serve rich men are expected to be strikingly honest and transparent (1 Cor. 4:2). There is no record that the steward of the rich man under consideration was not a thief. The accusation against him was about wastage. The Bible says: "And he said also unto his disciples, There was a certain rich man, which had a steward; and the same was accused unto him that HE HAD WASTED HIS GOODS." Luke 16:1 (KJV) [Emphasis mine] To waste means to "spend thoughtless", "throw away", "use inefficiently or inappropriately". What the rich man heard was that this steward spent his money, his goodwill, his name, his resources and, possibly, his time, thoughtlessly. This steward was a mindless spender. Are you also? This steward threw away things and opportunities with impunity! He used the name and the fame of his master inefficiently. He overcaptialised investment, on behalf of his master, thereby injuring the propensity of making profit from such investments. He will buy things that will eat up the profit of the business, just like many of us living above our means! He buys cars that are not needed by his master, he scraped and sold serviceable cars at ridiculous prices. This steward will engage services of people and companies that are not necessary and pay huge sum of money for such unnecessary services. He makes reckless financial commitments that are wasteful. He rough-handles properties of his master, such that new equipment will not last six months in his hand. A year old car will look like seven year old. Very reckless and heartless. Are you sure there is a reason for you to continue to serve the Master? This message will be on air in few minutes time. Shalom!
