ORDER “DROMOMANIA” https://cementoatlantico.bandcamp.com... Cemento Atlantico / 'Kashi fire' (Official Video) 25° 18' 39.1" N 83° 00' 50.71" E 25° 18' 25.73" N 83° 00' 38.29" E Varanasi in India is a city full of contrasts where life and death, joy and pain, water and fire coexist. Behind dark and dirty alleys lie piles of corpses covered with colored sheets, filled with flowers and sandalwood. Here the corpses await to be burned in Shiva's eternal fire. In Hindu belief, to reach Nirvana and abandon the cycle of reincarnations (Samsara) the corpse must be exhumed with Shiva's fire and the ashes must be scattered in the Ganges River. For this reason, people come from all over the world to die in Varanasi. The Manikarnika is the oldest and most sacred ghat (stairway on the banks of the river) in the Hindu world, it is the place where the funeral cremations of the end of the cycle take place. In ancient Sanskrit, Varanasi bears the name of Kashi, city of light, because the eternal flame of Shiva is kept there. The Dom, a community of about 500 individuals, belonging to the caste of the untouchables, keep the sacred fire alive and manage every aspect of the cremations: they take care of buying the wood, preparing the pyres and make sure that the flames (lit in the eternal fire through a bundle) consume the corpses entirely. Field recordings • The male chorus “Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra” was recorded just before the cremation of a Dom: it is a mantra of achievement of well-being bestowed by Shiva. The aim is to create a protective shield of divine vibrations that keeps negativity away forever. • The Gopichang is a monochord connected by a bamboo stick to a wooden resonance box, a devotional instrument typical of the order of Bāul minstrels. It was recorded along the alleys of Varanasi during the preparation of a crematorium pyre. • The Esraj is a stringed instrument from Bangladesh for centuries associated with the Sikh devotional culture (religious and political-military caste of Indian Punjab). Its main function is to imitate the human cry with astonishing accuracy. The recording took place during a collective funeral prayer on the banks of the Ganges River. • During the evening ceremony of the Ganga Aarti (a ritual dedicated to the sacred waters of the Ganges river, therefore to the goddess Ganga) in the Dashashwamedh ghat in Varanasi, the Daf was recorded. Ancient percussion instrument of Persian origin, it can be described as a large frame drum. The membrane is usually made up of animal skin while the frame is made of wood, and inside it there are metal rings and pendants that touch the membrane, resounding with each stroke.
