With Emre Deniz. Before reading on, answer this question: Why did Concord fail? Your guess is wrong. All of our guesses are wrong. The video-game industry is littered with opinions on why games 'fail', and even with hindsight, these opinions are generally completely without evidence, and largely incorrect, until now. In this talk we will go over case-studies of games that encountered not only challenges at release but also intense public scrutiny; and show statistics, experiments, and research that reveals actual underlying factors that caused misfires at launch. We will examine titles such as Helldivers, Battlefield 2042, Concord and a dozen others to bust popular opinions on why these games did not meet commercial expectations or faced adversities during their launches. This journey will challenge all of our internal assumptions, biases and opinions on why games 'fail'- offering attendees the opportunity to learn more about preventable risks, key-predictors, and a gain a different perspective on our industry or the concept of failure.
