Normally, I’d put up a Tetris 99 Maximus Cup video on the Saturday of the event, but this time, it happened to coincide with the sixth and final wave of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s Booster Course Pass, which was made available earlier that Thursday, so I went with the chronological order, hence this being on a Sunday this time. When this video goes live, there will still be another 35 hours of the Maximus Cup remaining. I like how they extended it by an extra 24 hours. Good for people who are, in fact, busy on Saturdays AND Sundays. In case you didn’t know, an HD remake of Super Mario RPG comes out the following Friday, on November 17th, 2023, on the Switch. This remake falls into the “faithful” category, with minimal changes to the story and gameplay, with the updates instead being entirely in the graphics and music, the latter of which is done by Yoko Shimomura, the same composer as the original Super Mario RPG (but is probably better known nowadays for her work in the Kingdom Hearts games). Mario and Bowser must team up, with Peach joining in and original characters Mallow and Geno, when the Mushroom Kingdom is threatened by Smithy and his gang of weapon-themed villains. Mario needs the seven Star Pieces, guarded by various people or controlled by adversaries (only one of which is actually in the Mushroom Kingdom), to restore the broken Star Road and challenge Smithy. This game was majorly groundbreaking in its day that might not feel so groundbreaking today: it was a comedic RPG at a time when most video game RPGs took themselves very seriously, this began the recurring “Mario must find seven of something, usually star-shaped” seen in later RPGs (most recently with Paper Mario: Color Splash, where he collects the Big Paint Stars, albeit only six of them), and it established Mario as a silent protagonist who must explain things non-verbally. It also depicted Peach not as a damsel in distress, but a fighter always on the front lines with Mario. It is interesting to me, to say the least, that Super Mario RPG HD takes the very same approach as Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl took with its original games (Pokémon Diamond and Pearl), right down to the “chibi” proportions, yet fan reception is like night and day. This has not gone unnoticed by other people, and the most common explanation is that Pokémon fans are used to remakes adding in a lot of other things (like the Battle Frontier into HeartGold and SoulSilver and new Mega Evolutions into Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire), whereas fans of Super Mario RPG put the game in extremely high regard and like that this stuck closely to its source. The background is a simple white background with golden star patterns (and Mario enemy outlines) on oppposite corners, featuring, from left to right, Bowser, Mallow, Mario, Geno, and Peach. All Tetriminos are represented by a Star Piece icon, and Badges are, well, Badges that Mario and is teammates can equip. The music begins with the general battle theme, then goes to the boss battle theme, and the top 10 theme is a battle against a Smithy Gang member. If you place 2nd or lower, the match will conclude with the theme that plays when Mallow learns something major about himself late in the game. If you place 1st, that's the general victory theme. (Super Mario RPG has a soundtrack with absurdly long names for most of the tracks, like “You and Toadofsky Make Wonderful Music Together,” so I haven’t memorized their names.) KO icons are Frog Coins. They’re normally yellow with red lettering and outline, but those you’ve KOed are red with yellow lettering and outline. The target icon is Mario's hammer (which has also become an iconic part of him in the RPGs, used in every Mario RPG since). Match #1 Skin: Special Theme 28 (Super Mario RPG) Mode: Normal I felt like I was doing fine, at least surviving against an overwhelmingly better foe, until our Internet cut out! That’s pretty normal with Spectrum, honestly, and when this happens, the while neighborhood goes out. Hence, I try to avoid playing online at certain times of the day and of the week, as Spectrum’s Internet has always been unstable for us. Still better than being with Frontier Communications though! While Frontier almost never disconnects, it's painfully slow (near dial-up speeds sometimes), yet three times more expensive. Match #2 Skin: Special Theme 28 (Super Mario RPG) Mode: Normal So I just kept at it and got the skin. I just needed patience. I thought I was struggling the whole time, but apparently I could still reach the top 10. Go fig. Match #3 Skin: Special Theme 28 (Super Mario RPG) Mode: Invictus Some of these players last WAY longer than you’d think they would just because of the Badge difference. I eventually reached 4 Badges but ran into trouble from someone with just 1 Badge. Then again, I often do this, fighting a superior adversary with limited KOs of my own.
