A brief history of AI in NLP, the Arabic NLP story Walid Magdy Walid Magdy is an associate professor at the school of Informatics, the University of Edinburgh (UoE) and a faculty fellow at the Alan Turing Institute. He is the founder and director of the social media analysis and support for humanity (SMASH) group at Edinburgh. His main research interests include natural language processing (NLP) and computational social science (CSS). He has an extensive industrial background from working earlier for IBM, Microsoft, and QCRI; in addition to consulting for Huawei and the United Nations. Walid has over 120 peer-reviewed published articles in top tier conferences and journals and a set of 9 patents filed under his name. He has graduated over 30 MSc and PhD students who are currently working in top places such as Google, Amazon, IBM, and Stanford university. Some of his work was featured in popular press, such as CNN, BBC, Washington Post, National Geographic, and MIT Tech reviews. In his talk, Dr. Walid discussed a very brief history of how the field of natural language processing (NLP) has developed over the last 40 years till we reached the technology of chatGPT and how this affects the Arabic NLP in the present and future.
