Though you do not now see him, you believe in him and rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory, 9 obtaining the outcome of your faith, the salvation of your souls. 10 Concerning this salvation, the prophets who prophesied about the grace that was to be yours searched and inquired carefully, 11 inquiring what person or time the Spirit of Christ in them was indicating when he predicted the sufferings of Christ and the subsequent glories. 12 It was revealed to them that they were serving not themselves but you, in the things that have now been announced to you through those who preached the good news to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven, things into which angels long to look. (ESV) [The Inexpressibly Glorious Joy of Salvation / 이루 말할수 없이 영광스러운 구원의 기쁨] We Christians should be normally expected to ‘rejoice with joy that is inexpressible and filled with glory’ (8) And Peter himself makes it clear that he is not writing about something exceptional, 1) but this joy comes from a sense of salvation that is inexpressible and filled with glory in verse 8. It is still an imperfect joy in this world less than the perfect one in heaven. Sometimes people experience this joy further than other Christians even though it is still less than in heaven. This joy comes from believing the unseen Jesus. 8 Verse 8 ‘you believe in (en) Jesus’ is described in Greek as ‘believe into (eis) Him.’ The combination of verb (believe) and preposition (into) implies a strong personal involvement in the act of believing, and carries a sense of resting oneself in the unseen Christ. 2) The more you love the unseen Jesus the more joy comes in you. This joy comes from Jesus’ glory. 11 The word ‘glory’ is actually plural, referring not only to Jesus’ glory but also ours. 3) And this glory includes our inexpressible joy. The prophets seemingly had this glorious joy by inquiring and searching for Jesus. Even angels do not perfectly know the inexpressible glorious joy. 12 Verse 12, ‘angels long to look’ is that they do not know this glorious joy perfectly so they still long to know it. As long as we live in this world we can imperfectly know the joy as a sense of salvation. But we still wait for the perfect inexpressibly glorious joy of our salvation in heaven.
