This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Katerina started her activism as a student and witnessed how the law can support people’s ability to take action in their communities. Now director of a leading European organization she is committed to expanding the space for citizen action through better laws and building people's capacity. Football and its dedicated fans, as well as her colleagues from Europe through the Middle East have taught her how persistence, good laws, and citizen empowerment can fight against government injustice and build powerful civil societies around the world. Katerina Hadzi-Miceva Evans is an expert on civil society law and activist working to create safeguards for freedom of association, assembly, and public participation. Her career is marked by a commitment to the promotion of civic space. Her passion for civil society engagement was shaped during her studies at the Law Faculty in Macedonia, when she started volunteering and co-founded an association to provide support to refugees. At the time, Macedonia’s first law regulating civil society organizations (CSOs) had just been enacted. She witnessed first-hand the importance of a supportive legal framework for people to join together and volunteer to improve lives. Upon receiving her Masters in Law degree at the Central European University in Budapest, she co-founded the Human Rights Initiative, an organization that has worked for over 15 years to promote the spirit of social activism and volunteerism in students from all over the world. She joined ICNL and ECNL 14 years ago to actively contribute to the creation of the policy and legal environment for growth of the civil society, and currently she is the Executive Director of ECNL. She is also an expert of the Council of Europe Expert Council on NGO Law. She has considerable international experience working in countries in Europe, Eurasia, and the Middle East. She has contributed to the development of numerous progressive policies concerning CSO participation in public policies, cooperation with public authorities, and financial sustainability, among others. She has co-developed frameworks that define the enabling environment for civil society,which are used to measure and identify threats to civil society. She has published numerous research papers and country specific analyses. About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event.
