Using your capital to transform lives | Leonardo Letelier | TEDxLiberdade

This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Leonardo Letelier left the lucrative consulting field to found Brazil’s first Social Fund, a pioneering organization that raises private sector funds to provide affordable loans to NGOs working to improve lives and communities. These loans link the capital and good intentions of private institutions to the on-the-ground expertise of NGOs, multiplying the number of lives reached. He challenges the potential philanthropists in the audience on their assumptions of giving—what is stopping you from transforming lives? Leonardo Letelier started SITAWI – Finance for Good (www.sitawi.net), Brazil’s first Social Fund, with the mission to develop financial infrastructure for the SOCIAL SECTOR. SITAWI is a REVOLVING FUND, aggregating donations from individuals, foundations and corporations, providing “mezzo-CREDIT” ($25,000-100,000) to mission-based businesses, recycling the repayments into the fund, and multiplying the impact on some of the most vulnerable people, communities, and ecosystems. Aligned to its nonprofit status, SITAWI’s interest rates are below market rates and Social LOANS include strategic advice. Since December 2008, SITAWI has lent over $900,000. SITAWI aims to bridge the gap between $3 billion in donations per year and a credit market of $300 billion, which is still inaccessible to much of the social sector. SITAWI also manage Social Funds for major donors, providing financial, operational and strategic management support for corporations, foundations and families seeking social impact solutions aligned to their businesses and values. Our goal is to simplify and increase social engagement, providing clients with full transparency and oversight. The underlying belief is that MORE diverse financial options and (much) more capital will increase the impact of organizations committed to social and environmental causes in Brazil. Leonardo holds an Industrial Engineer degree from the University of São Paulo and an MBA from Harvard Business School.
