If you buy anything for baking, it should be a kitchen scale. I love to weigh ingredients rather than use measuring cups, for several compelling reasons. First and most important, it's more accurate than volume measures. A cup of flour can vary wildly, depending on how you scoop the flour, but 120g of all-purpose flour is always 120g, no matter what you do. Using a scale is also faster and it cuts down on the amount of dishes you have to wash. Scales are particularly useful for novice bakers, because it takes the guesswork out of measuring; you can be sure each time that you have just the right amount of your ingredients. There are many digital scales to choose from and they range in price, but my recommendation for a good starter scale at a mid-price is the MyWeigh.
