Until a couple of months ago, the Los Angeles 1986 run had its two mainstay soundboards from 10/10 & 10/11 along with a more recent emergence of an audience source for the former show. However, that was blown out of the water when the second night of the run was put on YouTube by Jim Rinehart, who deserves all the credit for capturing arguably one of the strongest nights featured on the entire tour with excellent sound quality (many thanks also goes to him for the fresh Costa Mesa copy which is now finally complete!). Until this version of Bennie And The Jets emerged, the candidates for what might be everyone's favourite version from late-1986 would vary between a handful of versions with Oakland, Costa Mesa, the other LA nights, Melbourne and Sydney all receiving plenty of love. After listening to this, I can safely say this would be my number one choice and is a performance that saw my jaw drop on numerous occasions when first listening to it (and after plenty more times on repeat!). The vocal performance is far from the worst heard with Elton playing it more sensible and not going all out compared to the next performance at 10/10 and the band shining strong, Davey Johnstone with a unique guitar solo after the third chorus and David Paton having the night of his life with some of his bass runs being stupendously good. That's before getting to the solo which features one of the most enthusiastic audiences caught on tape from the era, something that seems to propel Elton with the changes of direction and piano runs flowing exceptionally well. We also have the added surprise of an extended over-the-top segment of Crocodile Rock which the crowd seem to love! Usually I dedicate an upload to a specific person but this is for all the people who share the same enthusiasm as myself for a performance as special as this. ENJOY!!!
