Single cell electrical characterization in bacteria Speaker: Ashley Nord, CNRS, Montpellier, France Chair: David Rueda, Imperial College, London/MRC-LMS, UK Co-Chair: Geoff Holdgate, AstraZeneca, UK Ashley Nord describes how she has engineered the bacterial flagellar motor to read-out the proton motive force (PMF) across the bacterial membrane. For this she has constructed a simple circuit model that describes PMF perturbations via laser induced activation of proteorhodospin. This shows that the PMF travels fast with little loss and is homogeneous on the scale of a single bacterium and is due to the rapid propagation of membrane voltage. Discoveries and inventions developed at the LMB, for example DNA sequencing and methods to determine the structure of proteins, have revolutionised all areas of biology. Its scientists work to advance understanding of biological processes at the molecular level. This information will help us to understand the workings of complex systems, such as the immune system and the brain, and solve key problems in human health.
