In the Bleak Midwinter - Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830–1894) More than a Christmas song, “In the Bleak Midwinter” is a theological reflection in music. It reminds us that Christ enters the harsh realities of human life, and in response, we are called to offer Him our hearts, our obedience, and our love the only gifts that truly matter. It is one of the most loved and reflective Christmas carols in Christian worship. The text was written in 1872 by Christina Georgina Rossetti (1830–1894), a renowned English poet known for her deep Christian faith and contemplative writing. The poem was first published under the title “A Christmas Carol” in Scribner’s Monthly. Rossetti wrote the poem as a meditation on the mystery of the Incarnation Christ’s humble birth into a cold, broken world. Rather than focusing on celebration and pageantry, the carol draws attention to, the poverty and humility of the manger, the contrast between heaven’s glory and earthly coldness and a deeply personal question at the end: “What can I give Him?” The final verse shifts the focus from the setting to the believer’s response, reminding Christians that the most meaningful gift to Christ is not gold or riches, but a faithful heart The performance by the Archbishop Vining Memorial Church Cathedral Choir beautifully captured the carol’s solemn tenderness. The solo lines, led with grace by Placidaus Ogueliwu and Peace Chukwuere, reflected the reflective spirit of the piece which is gentle, prayerful, and deeply moving. This was recorded by my good friend Nonso Areh in a church service
