(15 May 1998) English/Nat The UK Prime Minister Tony Blair has opened the G8 economic summit in the city of Birmingham, with a reception for his fellow political leaders. President Clinton and his fellow summiteers were welcomed with by a fanfare from Herald's trumpets. The hard talking begins on Saturday. The arrival of the men leading the world's major economic states, brought the crowds onto the streets of Birmingham. Tony Blair and his wife Cherie greeted them at the city's Council House, where the official opening reception for the summit took place. Later Tony Blair told reporters that the preparatory talks on Friday had been useful in themselves. SOUNDBITE: (English) "Well, I think, you know, for example our discussion on the world economy today, we agreed a whole lot of measures to improve the world financial system, so that some of the things that have happened in the Asia economic crisis don't happen again. And that is important because it means jobs and investment and industry throughout the world on world debt - and particularly the very heavily indebted countries we are going to agree a series of measures tomorrow on that and on the environment too." SUPER CAPTION: Tony Blair, British Prime Minister The crowds were equally enthusiastic in their reception of the American President, Bill Clinton, cheering and reaching out to shake his hand. Earlier the President had visited a local public house (bar), sipping from a pint of beer and eating snacks with the pub regulars. But he had got down to business soon after, in bilateral meetings French President Jacques Chirac, Japanese Prime Minister Ryutaro Hashimoto, and of course Tony Blair. High on Clinton's agenda for the talks is this week's nuclear testing by India and the rioting in Indonesia. French President Jacques Chirac expressed his concern about the civil unrest in Indonesia, in his meeting with Clinton. He said it was up to President Suharto to resolve the problem as he saw fit. Germany's Chancellor Kohl and Russia's President Yeltsin, and their wives, arrived shortly after Chirac, and after the obligatory posing for the cameras, made their way with the Blairs into the grand Victorian city hall for the opening reception. Later on Friday night, all the summit leaders relaxed at an informal group dinner in the tea room of a nearby museum.
