Social Mobility ERGs: Why 'Professional' and 'Workplace Etiquette' are Barriers, not skills

I once had a manager we nicknamed Miranda Priestly (IYKYK) They rarely gave clear deadlines - you would have to prise it out of them, like drawing blood. When I asked them for rules of thumb that my team could follow, they said, "I usually expect email replies within the day, and work requests within 48 hours, unless I say otherwise." I was 'managing' them even though they were my boss. That's how absurd unwritten rules are at work. This Friday, I'm chatting with Benjy Kusi – an inclusion and wellbeing consultant, speaker, author, and content creator with over 230,000 followers across social media, who has posted and spoken about this topic many times. And it always pops off (aka resonates :) Some people have an advantage when it comes to unwritten rules – maybe they grew up watching their parents talk about work, how to navigate 'professional' environments, and what is or isn't appropriate. For others, especially those from lower socio-economic backgrounds or different cultural contexts, the exposure is much narrower. Words like 'professional' and 'etiquette' are often code for "you should already know this" – and when you don't, you're left playing catch-up or quietly judged for getting it wrong.
