Located at the base of the spine, this energetic centre is the foundation of the entire chakra system; when this centre is out of balance, it affects the rest of the whole system. You can think of it like a big ancient tree without strong roots. Physically, root chakra is located at the base of the spine and is associated with the perineum, the lower 3 vertebrae of the spine, and the pelvis. Energetically, it affects out sense of security, stability, connectedness, wholeness, our place in the world and how we feel about ourselves within. Mentally, this chakra ensures that all of our needs our met and that we feel calm, content, and serene as we move through life. Resonating with the earth element and the colour red, this practice incorporates yoga asana or poses to stimulate and awaken Muladhara. Visualization and breath are used to deepen into the experience of the root chakra and to help instill a sense of groundedness throughout the body and the mind. This is a gentle beginner friendly yoga practice with room for variation. One or two blocks are encouraged but not required. If you don't have blocks at home, you might reach for a stack of books; get creative! In this practice, we will focus our attention on grounded postures that remind us of our strong connection to the earth to build strength and stability into our foundation - the legs and the feet. Also, we'll explore Apana Vayu or the downward movement of energy in the body by way of the Nadis to help facilitate a sense of groundedness and connection.
