At the foot of the Berkshire Downs and with the Ridgeway National Trail nearby, it’s ideal for a peaceful ramble. Expect thatched cottages, rolling views, and a place that feels plucked from a postcard. 🕰️ Highlights, History & Local Lore Childrey gets its name from Old English, meaning "Cilla’s stream." It shows up in Anglo-Saxon charters from the 900s and the Domesday Book of 1086. Back then it supported just eight households, with locals earning their keep through willow-weaving and sheep-rearing. The land was so prized that it soon caught the attention of wealthy abbeys and, later, ambitious Tudor yeomen who turned the village’s rich grazing meadows into quiet prosperity. The Church of St Mary’s, built around 1200 and remodelled in the 1400s, still stands quietly watchful. Should you visit, peer at the south wall and you’ll spot a “scratch sundial” etched by 14th-century hands—an early way to keep time by shadow! Just west of the village is Childrey Warren. The name's no accident—this was once a managed rabbit warren in the 1600s, when rabbit meat and fur were the delicacies of Stuart England. But long before the bunnies came the bones. In 2019, archaeologists uncovered 26 Iron Age skeletons here—likely ritual burials dating back more than 2,000 years. It’s the kind of discovery that makes you tread a little more thoughtfully. If you happen to be walking on Midsummer’s Eve, well—local legend says the Lady of the Vale still rides these lanes, blessing the new lambs in the hush of twilight. Oh—and one night in 1644, during the English Civil War, King Charles I stayed here at the manor house, hosted by the Royalist Fettiplace family. Just a king, catching some kip before the next battle. 📍 Walk Starting Point (What3Words): ///audio.stretcher.limelight 🗺️ Full Map of All Walks, Drives, and My Ever-Growing To-Do List: https://www.google.com/maps/d/u/1/edi... 📽️ Walk Stats • Walk #266 • Time: 2:30pm – 7th April 2025, lovely English Spring • Difficulty: ⭐ 1 / 5 • Beauty: ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ 5 / 5 • Steps: 4,017 • Distance: 1.88 Miles / 3.03 km • Weather and Temperature: Another cracking blue-sky Spring day!
