Climbing Nevado de Santa Isabel (16,211' / 4,950m) in Colombia’s Los Nevados National Park is a stunning high-altitude mountaineering experience going higher than the summit of Mount Whitney. This Andean volcano is a critical acclimatization push for Nevado del Tolima, and a great climb by itself featuring a vanishing glacier and a rare solar halo known as a Glory. This is Part 2 of my 'Colombian Trilogy.' After building red blood cells in Bogotá, I headed into the high country to stand on the ice of the equator. What was supposed to be a standard warmup turned into a lesson in human dynamics and environmental reality. Standing at the edge of a receding glacier is a sobering reminder of how fast these mountains are changing. From the alien 'Páramo' gardens to the deep orange mountain shadow at sunrise, Santa Isabel provided a visual payoff that few peaks in the Cascades can match. Join me as we navigate an expedition with first-time climbers and prepare for the final boss of the trip: the 17,110ft Nevado del Tolima. 0:00 The Páramo Jealousy 0:20 Headed to Pereira 0:53 Heading into Los Nevados National Park 1:37 The Páramo Hike: Higher than Mount Whitney 2:48 Night at El Cisne Refuge 3:19 Alpine Start 3:40 Sunrise at 16,000' 4:40 Reaching the Summit of Santa Isabel 5:46 "First Time on Ice" - The Team Interview 6:30 The Long Descent: Mud Pits and Stone Walls 7:37 Stats & The Final Boss (Nevado del Tolima) Nevado de Santa Isabel, Colombia Mountaineering, Volcano Climbing, High Altitude Trekking All narration in English
