The relationship between originality and assessment in higher education is deeply intertwined. Originality is often used as a key criterion for evaluating students’ ability to produce independent and meaningful contributions to a subject; it is also commonly viewed as a marker of academic integrity to ensure that the submitted assignments reflect students’ intellectual efforts and are truly their own work. However, the rise of GenAI is complicating these traditional notions of originality. In this talk, Dr. LUO draws on findings from several of her research projects to explore: · What do we mean by original work in a time when knowledge production becomes increasingly collaborative, distributed and AI-mediated? · If a student uses GenAI to assist in their work, does that necessarily mean the student’s work is no longer original? · How do teachers make their evaluative judgements when assessing students’ work, and how should they?
