When Matra announced they would compete in the 3 liter class at Le Mans in 1968, French racing fans were ecstatic. A car representing their country would be fighting for the overall win at Le Mans for the first time in nearly 30 years. The speed of Matras development was staggering. The aviation company purchased the Bonnet car company in 1963, and produced their first sportscar, the 530, in 1965. The same year, the 610 made its racing debut using a 1.1 liter (and later 1.6 liter) Ford engine. With the aid of a wind tunnel, the 620 was radically different from the 610, which was built around a 1.9 liter BRM V8. Although very successful in lower formulas, these engines never made it to the end of an endurance race. For 1967, Matras new plan was to build their own engines. Using their connections with Simca, Georges Martin was assigned the task of building an all new 3 liter V12 based on the FIA's new formula, allowing it to fit in both Formula 1 and WSC group 5 prototypes. Jean-Luc Lagardère, Matra's CEO, even struck a deal with the French government to procure a 6 million franc loan, with a promise to build an "all French" car for F1 and Le Mans, along with sponsorship from the newly formed Elf oil company. Unbeknownst to them, Martin had passed a significant amount of the design work to BRM. Sir Alfred Owen, head of BRM, accidentally disclosed his company's involvement in the project at a dinner banquet. When word of this reached Lagardère, the BRM design was scrapped, and a new deal was negotiated with french engineering firm Moteur Moderne. In the meantime, the new Matra 630 would use the old 1.9 liter BRM for Le Mans. Both cars failed to finish. In just 7 months, the MS9 V12 was ready for the start of the 1968 season. Allegedly boasting 385 horsepower, the engine was "thirsty, underpowered, unreliable and prone to overheating". In Formula 1, the factory Matra was also one of the heaviest cars, scoring only 8 points compared to Tyrrells 45 points using the Matra Cosworth. Thanks to a multitude of political problems in the spring of 1968, the 24 Hours of Le Mans was delayed until September, which gave Matra just enough time to fit a 3 liter V12 into one long tail version of the 630, which would be driven by Johnny Servoz-Gavin and Henri Pescarolo. Qualifying in 6th, the team fell back early due to a faulty windshield wiper, and lost time again later in the race due to a puncture, before a second puncture irreparably damaged the car with 2 hours to go while running in 2nd place. https://f3classictracks.sellfy.store/ https://thracing.de/wsc-legends-60s-p...
