10 hours of Crossfit working through 10 Hero and benchmark workouts. This was for charity. All details of the charity are just below. Overall had a great day but I must admit...it was tough. A bit of background before the bit where we ask you to part with some cash and to join us for some CrossFit! The first thing to say is that although this is a sad story, it is also a story about hope. Our friends, Jenna and Dave, have three kids. Their eldest daughter is a beautiful seven year old called Rose. Rach has known Jenna and Dave for 25 years. She is Godmother to their other daughter. They are the best of people and we love them all. When Rose was five, Jenna and Dave started to notice that she was struggling with her balance. She found it difficult to get herself up and down stairs or into and out of the car. Rose had noticed it too. She would never attempt to climb anything. When she went to the park with her friends she would watch them climbing up trees or on a climbing frame, but she would stay away. Things got worse. Eventually, Rose couldn’t walk up stairs at all and became reliant on a wheelchair to get around. Last year, Rose was diagnosed with Ataxia Telangiectasia (or A-T). A-T is a neurodegenerative disease which causes severe disability. You have never heard of it because it is really, really rare. There are only about 180 cases in the whole of the UK. It is also really vicious. It attacks the areas of the brain responsible for balance, movement and coordination. It weakens the immune system, causing a predisposition to infection. It prevents repair of broken DNA, increasing the risk of cancer. There is no known treatment. There is no cure. The life expectancy of an A-T sufferer is between 19 and 25 years of age. So far, not good. But remember, this is a story about hope. At the end of last year, Jenna and Dave applied to get Rose on a clinical trial. The aim of the trial is to develop a treatment for the part of A-T that impairs balance. If it works, the hope is that Rose will be out of her wheelchair, that she will be ok on stairs, and that she might even get herself up on that climbing frame. Imagine being 7 and living with this awful illness. How much better would life be if you could stand up, walk outside and climb a tree with your friends? Rose has been too poorly this year to start the trial until now, but her place has just been confirmed. Every month for the next year, Jenna and Dave have to take Rose from their home in Hertford up to Nottingham where the trial is being carried out. They stay there for a couple of days. On day one, Rose has blood taken which is then mixed with a corticosteroid. On day two, the treated blood is re-infused. Jenna and Dave don’t have to pay for the trial, but they are having to take unpaid time off to take Rose up to Nottingham every month. We are hoping to be able to ease the financial burden all of this creates by raising money towards the costs that go along with getting Rose through the trial. We would also love to be able to make a meaningful donation to The A-T Society - a fabulous charity that has been fantastic with Rose since her diagnosis and a great support for Jenna and Dave. So we are raising money the only way CrossFitters know how...sponsored hurting! On Saturday 6th April we will be working out for ten hours (8am till 6pm) at the one and only M Squared Fitness in Sharston, Manchester. If you don’t know CrossFit, this is the deal: we do high intensity exercise over varying time domains. Every workout (or ‘WOD’) contains a number of different exercises, usually to be completed as quickly as possible. If a particular WOD is especially brutal it gets given a name and is repeated by CrossFitters around the world. Our plan is to run through the CrossFit alphabet of named workouts from A to T (get it?) taking it in turn to do a different WOD every half an hour, all day long. CrossFit aficionados amongst you might know that there are only named Girls workouts for letters A to N...which means the last six workouts will be Heroes. Gulp. That's ten Benchmarks and Heroes each, back-to-back, for ten hours. We might end up scaling some. We might make some into team workouts. But there will be absolutely no sandbagging. This. Is. Going. To. Hurt. We are hoping to raise £1,000...and that’s where you come in! Either sponsor us online and enjoy our suffering from the comfort of your favourite internet-enabled device or, even better, come on down to the box, throw some money in a bucket, throw some plates on a bar and throwdown right alongside us! How often do you get the chance to test/re-test some benchmarks, amongst friends, for an amazing cause? Almost never, right? This is a story about hope. We all can make a difference. She can do it. www.gofundme.com/a-to-t-for-at
