TL;DR “What’s it like for you in Washington?” The last time I posted a Damien Jurado cover was on Valentine’s Day of last year. I set up a tripod in my front room and just played — I didn’t expect it to really be seen or heard. But it turned out to be a turning point. Exactly one year later, I found myself playing the same song again — this time 900 miles away, in Damien’s home state (I’d never been), singing for a crowded room. One of my favorite moments to date. Thank you all for the part you’ve played in setting this into motion. It’s starting to feel real now, especially after having had the absolute pleasure of meeting a few of you face to face. I’m beyond grateful. x ⸻ I know I have been a little quiet lately, but not for lack of music or wanting to be here. (A sincere thank you for all the kind comments. I wish there were a pause button so I could stop and catch up with everyone). But it’s all for good reason… Back in December, I got an email from someone who had discovered my music here and asked if I’d come out to Washington to play a few shows. After several conversations (and a Google search, haha), I said yes. I can’t say I’m not used to doing things outside my comfort zone — mostly because most things are — but this trip was full of unknowns: traveling to a new place where I would stay with and sing with people I hadn’t even met. (Not to mention the stress of flying with my J-45 — during a week of airline horror stories and snowstorms.) It was kind of terrifying — but also really, very exciting. I think the excitement came from a feeling of wonder: I wonder what it’ll be like… what will happen… but mostly — “I wonder how I will take it all in.” It felt like an experiment, or maybe a dare. Kind of like I was observing my own life with quiet curiosity, asking, “What’s going to happen next?” Somehow, it all worked out — I really couldn’t have hoped for a better experience. I was lucky to collaborate with the incredibly talented and genuine Lennon Vanderdoes. We met just hours before our first show and quickly forgot we didn’t know each other. Our first show happened to fall on Valentine’s Day — one year to the day since I posted that last Damien Jurado cover. That video felt significant. It was sort of “the” turning point for me — I had just gotten some new equipment (@audigolabs ) that gave me more confidence in recording audio and video). After that, albeit hesitantly, I stopped “dipping my toes” and just jumped in. I’ve been posting consistently since. Damien Jurado has long been a source of musical inspiration and someone dear to my heart — and now here I was, in his home state, belatedly taking his advice and having a go at following my dream. It may sound like a stretch, but to me, it felt more meaningful than a coincidence — or at least like it wasn’t an accident. One of those rare moments where you feel like you are exactly where you should be. ⸻ FINALLY, it all circles back to this — yet another Damien Jurado song. “Working Titles” has been one of my favorites since it was released in 2012 — just a couple months before our paths first crossed, when Damien invited me on stage to sing with him. The song started playing in my head as soon as Washington was mentioned, and I thought it’d be the perfect video-introduction to share the news. As you can see, that didn’t pan out— I had to stop myself. I kept thinking maybe I should be using that time to practice for the shows instead :) People were going out of their way (figuratively and literally) to come see me play live. I couldn’t not put my whole heart into it. In the end, I never did find myself among strangers — it felt more like a group of mirrored souls finally meeting for the first time… (Rick, all the credit goes to you and your wizard ways. I can’t thank you and Cheryl enough for your trust, kindness, and generosity. Thank you for tucking us away in your dream-like neck of the woods and letting us sing our hearts out in your living room). To all of my family, friends, and new friends— some who traveled long distances to be there — I’m still in disbelief. Thank you for your support—it carries me. It was also so surreal to meet a few of my YouTube people in person. I enjoyed that part so much! My heart has been filled beyond capacity for sure this time— I can’t tell you how much it all means to me. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Thank you again to Rick and Cheryl (@LonelyRoadsMusic) , Mary Ellen at Olalla Winery and Vineyard, Lennon (@lennonvanderdoes3583 ) and Morgan, Gary, David and Donna (with surprise guests: Stephi, Sarah and Nick), Gordon and Deb, Madison and Devin, Nana and Pop, and last but not least, my very wonderful travel companion Brent. x P.S. Thank you Gary, for the magical artwork: “Yawning Coyote” painted by: Lucy Campbell I love it so much. #cover #acoustic #americana #guitar #singersongwriter
