Entre esses cavaleiros, sobressai um, chamado Gomes Aires, que se distingue pela sua bravura e valentia. Na batalha de Ourique o cavaleiro Gomes Aires destacou-se entre todos os que combatiam por D. Afonso Henriques. Diz a lenda que, o Rei quis recompensar tal bravura e valentia, para exemplo dos outros. Fez-lhe doação das terras que formam a freguesia de Gomes Aires atualmente, com muitos outros benefícios. O cavaleiro, fundou então a aldeia a que deu o seu nome, perpetuando assim a sua bravura e o bom nome deixado.
