Great Borne ,Starling Dodd & Herdus. Ennerdale. Lake District. 3rd March 2026

A superb hike from Ennerdale in the Western Lake District up to two Wainwright Fells, Great Borne 616m & Starling Dodd 633m, also taking in the Birkett Fell of Herdus. The walk starts from Bowness Knott car park next to Ennerdale Water. We start by walking a short distance back along the Ennerdale Road to a stile. Once over the stile we follow the path up the fellside which then climbs steeply beside Rake Beck. The path follows Rake Beck and involves a small scramble section. Once on the ridge we take a small detour up to the Birkett Fell of Herdus. From Herdus we then follow the path up to the summit of Great Borne. From Great Borne we follow a clear path up to Starling Dodd. We then start the route down by going over the small peak of Little Dodd. From Little Dodd we follow the path down to Ennerdale Valley, crossing a stream near the bottom. Once we reach the track at the valley bottom we follow this back to Bowness Knott Car Park. Superb views throughout the walk. Distance is around 8 miles.
