The Great Basin Desert is famous in North America. It is a huge basin where water does not flow to the ocean. This creates a heavily alkaline and dry environment that is hostile to life. A land of extremes, passing through the desert is a challenging ordeal that was a nessicity to get to the goldfields of California. Gold and Lithium deposits are scattered through the high desert of Nevada. One of the largest lithium deposits in North America. There are mines all over the various mountains in the desert. Mining in this region presented many logistical challenges for workers, equipment, and mining operations. Many towns in the area have a history of mining, railways, and poineer trails. As we travel along you can see the old history of the region. The California Gold Rush trail passes through the 40 Mile Desert, an incredibly difficult section that was extremely challenging for those passing through. When we get into southern Oregon, it becomes incredibly remote with nothing but desert and volcanoes. It is a very unique experience.
