Cell phone use is often blamed for “tech neck,” but the underlying issue is not just posture—it’s how prolonged positions trigger the nervous system and create fascial holding patterns over time. When the head and shoulders are held forward for extended periods, the brain’s survival system (the fight-or-flight response) does not recognize that you’re texting or scrolling. It only registers sustained stillness and vulnerability. In response, cortisol is released, and the body begins to “lock down” through fascial tension to protect itself. Over time, this protective response commonly creates restrictions in the neck, shoulders, and—most importantly—the clavicular region. A thin but highly sensitive fascial membrane covers the clavicle. When this membrane becomes restricted, the clavicle can no longer elevate properly during arm movement. This alters shoulder mechanics and often leads to pain and inflammation at the acromioclavicular (AC) joint. In many cases, imaging studies such as X-rays, MRIs, or CT scans appear normal because the issue is not structural damage—it is fascial restriction. When the fascia above and below the clavicle becomes dense, arm movement is compromised, and pain emerges as a secondary effect. Common patterns associated with prolonged phone use include: • Neck and upper shoulder tightness • Pain near the collarbone or front of the shoulder • Discomfort when lifting the arm overhead • AC joint irritation without clear imaging findings • Chronic tension that seems “unexplained” Understanding these patterns helps explain why symptoms persist despite normal medical tests—and why addressing fascial restrictions can significantly improve comfort and movement.
