19 | Can A Narcissist Change For the Better and Find a Connection With God?

Check out this podcast to learn about what Islam teaches us about a narcissist’s ability to change for the better. Narcissism falls under the category of “Al Nafs Al Ammarah Bin Soo’” - The Ego that is more inclined than others to do evil and we have been given Islamic guidance in regards to how to deal with people who possess this type of nafs/ego. Many narcissistic Muslim men and women struggle to change, repent and improve, as they cannot recognise God’s help. Many people also attempt to fix, help and change the narcissists they love, which only makes them worse and destroys them too in the process. If you are narcissistic, or have narcissistic friends, family members and perhaps partners, do share this podcast with them, out of hope that it will inspire them to make the changes needed to become better people and Muslims inshallah. Please do not ignore this, pride and arrogance will make you deaf and blind to the call and mercy of Allah's help. “But my call has only made them flee the more: And whenever I have called them that I may forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, cover themselves with their garments, and persist [with their wrongdoing] and are puffed up with pride.” (Al-Qur'an 71:6-7). Once fuelled by feelings and emotions of pride, it can become easy to forget how to listen or to humble oneself when Allah sends humbling experiences to knock the arrogance out of you. This can ruin the relationship you have with not only those around you but sever your ties with Allah Himself as well that you will need to save yourself. To become deaf to the call of Allah, as this verse alludes to, will destroy both faith and our ummah. It, therefore, remains imperative that we continuously struggle towards ridding ourselves of feelings of pride and arrogance.
