Explaining New Symbols from SBA for Identifying Sterile Packaging Configuration

In 2017, Europe introduced the Medical Device Regulation (MDR), and this included new requirements for sterile packaging. One of these requirements is that the sterile packaging must have an indication so that it can be recognized and distinguished from other parts of the packaging. Sterile packaging must allow for aseptic presention to minimize the risk of infection to the patient and avoid contamination of the sterile field. For healthcare professionals to perform their actions correctly, it is essential that they understand the packaging configuration. Sterile packaging systems are often composed of many layers of protective packaging to protect against dust, mechanical and other hazards. Sometimes it is difficult to differentiate between the sterile barrier system and protective packaging, and a misinterpretation of these layers could put the patient at risk. In response, the Sterile Barrier Association recently created and validated a set of symbols for sterile barrier systems. Validation (completed primarily in Europe, USA and Japan) demonstrated that the symbols enabled nurses to correctly differentiate packages and their sterile barrier systems from protective packaging.
