3/3 Wildfire Effects and Recovery in Urban Ecosystems The unprecedented severity, effects, and dynamics of recent wildfires in California, the Western United States and elsewhere are now affecting the demographics of urban neighborhoods and urbanized portions of the Wildland-Urban Interface. Science-based information on defensible space, firewise community practices, fuel treatments, structural hardening of homes, and post fire structure loss is available and actively being studied. However, guidelines and information on post-fire urban forest restoration practices, including species selection and landscaping practices, and local and state-level preparations, resources, and policy making are few, anecdotal, and not easily accessible.
