In the eleventh message of our series through the Gospel of John, Pastor Richard turns our attention to one of the most personal and transformative encounters in all of Scripture: Jesus’ conversation with the Samaritan woman at the well in John 4:1–15. As Jesus travels from Judea back to Galilee, John tells us that He had to pass through Samaria—a route most Jews intentionally avoided because of centuries of hostility between Jews and Samaritans. Yet this journey was not an accident. Jesus intentionally stops in the Samaritan town of Sychar, where He meets a woman whose life is marked by shame, isolation, and brokenness. In this powerful interaction, Jesus breaks through cultural barriers, social expectations, and personal pain to offer something far greater than physical water. He offers living water—a new life that satisfies the deepest spiritual thirst and flows into eternal life. This message explores the long and complicated history between Jews and Samaritans, the significance of Jesus choosing to travel through Samaria, and the deeper meaning behind His conversation with the woman at the well. Through this story, we are reminded that Jesus knows every detail of our lives—our past, our struggles, and the things we try to hide—and yet He still meets us with grace and an invitation to something new. Pastor Richard also points us to the promise of Isaiah 61, where God declares His mission to bind up the brokenhearted, proclaim freedom to captives, and exchange beauty for ashes. Just as Jesus met the Samaritan woman in the middle of her broken story, He continues to meet people today, offering hope, restoration, and the living water that never runs dry. Join us as we continue our journey through the Gospel of John and discover how Jesus seeks out the overlooked, confronts our excuses, and invites us to leave behind the empty wells of our old lives to experience the fullness of life found in Him.
