Higher Protein linked to lower Mortality in Kidney Disease?

In a new study published in JAMA Network Open, researchers investigated the impact of protein intake on all-cause mortality among older adults with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Here are the key findings: Risk Reduction with Higher Protein Intake: Among 8543 adults aged 60 years and older, those with higher total protein intake experienced significant risk reductions for all-cause mortality over a 10-year period. The risk reductions were as follows: 12% lower risk for CKD patients with protein intakes of 1.0 g/kg/d 21% lower risk for protein intakes of 1.2 g/kg/d 27% lower risk for protein intakes of 1.4 g/kg/d 33% lower risk for protein intakes of 1.6 g/kg/d Compared to a reference intake of 0.8 g/kg/d. Incremental Benefits: Each 0.2 g/kg/d increase in total protein intake was associated with an 8% lower risk of death in the CKD group. In the group without CKD, the risk reduction was even more pronounced at 15%. Age-Specific Effects: For adults aged 75 years and older, every 0.2 g/kg/d increase in total protein intake correlated with a 9% lower risk of all-cause mortality. Interestingly, younger adults (under 75 years) did not exhibit a significant survival advantage. Carballo-Casla A, Avesani CM, Beridze G, et al.
