Part 22 of our Epic Remodel series covers June 14th through June 27th, 2020, as major front deck construction, exterior prep, and interior finish work all move forward at once. Concrete crews begin forming and pouring reinforced footings for the new front deck and its large, multi-purpose planter box. This planter is designed to do more than hold flowers — it will help support the deck, distribute water softener discharge through a gravel drainage system, and provide a natural visual edge instead of a traditional railing. Because the soil level will sit midway between deck height and ground level, landscaping will help define the deck perimeter without blocking views. Along the way, the crew discovers an old footing drain line completely packed with sand, prompting a redesign that reroutes drainage through the planter box system. Out back, crews continue prepping the rear deck for its future concrete paver surface. Self-adhering flashing is installed over the framing to protect the structure from moisture, composite trim is added to the rim joists, and stainless steel borders to constrain the pavers are installed. Forms are built and poured for the new heat pump compressor pad. Inside, the tile installer moves from dry layout into full installation of the large-format 12”×24” porcelain floor tile that forms a continuous “river” running from the guest bathroom, through the hallways and kitchen, into the pantry, mudroom, and laundry room. By the end of the two weeks, most of the tile is set and grouted, transforming these pathways from subfloor to finished surface. Cabinet and finish details advance as well. The laundry room sink is installed, replacement cabinets are mounted in the garage, cabinet hardware is added throughout the house, and window openings are prepped for interior stools. Countertops and backsplashes are installed in the pantry and bathrooms, along with sinks, marking another major visual milestone. Part 22 captures a busy stretch where structural concrete, exterior systems, and interior finishes all progress together — with both the house and the outdoor living spaces clearly taking their final shape.
