The Italian organist and composer Marco Enrico Bossi (1861-1925) studied in Bologna and Milan (where Ponchielli taught him composition) and made a career as a teacher of organ and composition at various Italian conservatories. He was also an organ recitalist of international renown. His last tour - to the USA - included a recital at the huge Wanamaker Organ in Philadelphia. Sadly, he died at sea on the voyage home. His organ music is still widely played, and there are several performances here on YouTube. He wrote a few piano pieces too. This beautiful cradle song (marked 'mosso' in case you think I am playing it too fast) shows his skill as a composer - clearly influenced by contemporary French music. The set of pieces from which this comes seems to be copyrighted by Rieter-Biedermann in Germany in 1907, and I assume that it is not the Cinq Morceaux. Op. 95. This piece is dedicated to the indefatiguable French pianist Jeanne Monduit, who, at a concert in Paris in 1876 with Jules Danbé's orchestra, played concertos by Beethoven and Mendelssohn, Schumann's 'Carnaval', a Beethoven sonata and a Chopin Ballade - plus encores. She obviously gave good value for money!
