Welcome to @powerofknowledgeacademy In this video you will learn about the anatomy and physiology of human kidney with the help of 3d animations and image illustrations. The kidneys are shaped like kidney beans and are approximately the size of an adult fist, with a reddish-brown color. They perform five critical functions: 1. Osmoregulation 2. Blood pressure maintenance 3. Hormone production 4. Acid-base balance 5. Excretion of waste products We explore the anatomy of the kidney, starting with the renal capsule, a tough outer layer that protects the kidney. Surrounding the renal capsule are fatty tissues that provide additional protection and insulation. At the top of each kidney is the adrenal gland, which, while situated on the kidney, does not directly affect its function. The kidney has a convex and a concave side, with the concave side containing the hilum – the entry point for essential structures such as the renal artery, renal vein, and renal pelvis. Inside, the kidney consists of the renal cortex and the renal medulla. The cortex appears as the outer region when the renal capsule is peeled away, while the medulla forms pyramid-shaped structures known as renal pyramids, separated by renal columns. Each kidney contains 8 to 18 pyramids. The nephron, the kidney's structural and functional unit, is divided between the cortex and medulla regions. Urine collects at the apex of each pyramid in the renal papillae, which connect to minor renal calyces. These minor calyces merge to form major calyces, which then combine into the renal pelvis, leading to the ureter and finally the bladder. When the bladder reaches a certain capacity, the urge to urinate is triggered, allowing the urine to be excreted from the body. #KidneyAnatomy, #KidneyFunctions, #RenalSystem, #NephronStructure #AnatomyAndPhysiology #HowKidneysWork #RenalCortex #RenalMedulla
