Avantgarde Cultural Foundation is a non-profit cultural organisation which operates in Cyprus. The Foundation’s purpose is to strengthen and improve the cultural life of the island, support young Cypriot musicians and promote the rich culture of Cyprus outside its boundaries. Since its foundation, in 2001, Avantgarde has a strong presence in the cultural life of the country. "The Piano Tour" is yet another initiative of the Foundation in its attempt to deliver classical music to as broad an audience as possible. A grand piano, solo or occasionally accompanied by another instrument or voice, travels around the island and finds its place in unconventional, least-to-be-expected, locations. "The Piano Tour" recitals are broadcasted live via social media. On Saturday 6 August 2022, "The Piano Tour" made its way to the grounds of Kolossi Castle, west of Limassol. The castle is a former Crusader stronghold on the island of Cyprus. It held great strategic importance in the Middle Ages, and contained large facilities for the production of sugar from the local sugarcane, one of Cyprus' main exports in the period. The original castle was built in 1210 by the Frankish military, when the land of Kolossi was given by King Hugh I to the Knights of the Order of St.John of Jerusalem. The present castle was built in 1454 by the Hospitallers under the Commander of Kolossi, Louis de Magnac, whose coat-of-arms can be seen carved into the castle's walls. Further to its sugar, the area is also known for its sweet wine, Commandaria. At the wedding banquet of King Richard the Lionheart's marriage to Berengaria of Navarre at nearby Limassol, he allegedly declared it to be the "wine of kings and the king of wines." It has been produced in the region for millennia, and is recognised as the oldest continually-produced and named wine in the world. At this unique location, in front of the castle, pianist Daniella Nassar delivered to locals and tourist-visitors to the castle an hour of music starting with her own arrangment of Mikis Theodorakis' "Chrysoprasino Fyllo" before moving on to Anastasios Antoniou's "Judo" and Modest Mussorsgky's "Pictures at an Exhibition".
