If you have back pain and are looking for relief, click the link below to learn more about my proven back pain treatment program... http://www.physicaltherapyjohnson.com... The slump test is a test you can do at home to place tension on the nerves in your body. It can help you determine if pain or tightness in the back of your leg is due to muscle tightness or irritation of a nerve that runs down the back of the leg. As we slump and bring the chin to the chest, we tension one end of the nervous system- think of the nervous system as a continuos loop... pulling on either end will tension it. As we bend the chin to the chest we tension the system from above... and the spinal cord in the lower back moves upwards towards the head. As we pull the toes up and straighten the leg we further tension the system from below. The combination of the chin to the chest and the leg straight tensions the cord from both ends- placing maximal tension on the nervous system. Feeling some tension is normal... but intense pain, numbness, or tingling is abnormal. As we look up, we take tension off one end of the system- slackening the entire thing and allowing tightness or pain in the back of the thigh to lessen (due to less tension). Pretty neat! If you're feeling tension in the back of your leg that won't quit--- and stretching it out makes it worse... a nerve is likely irritated. That's the slump test explained.
