Évora's Carnival Brincas are a popular community theatre form whose origins lie in the outlying neighbourhoods and rural parishes of Évora. Brincas are made up of men and boys who memorise and dramatise verses in "décimas". They take to the streets every year during Carnival to liven up the city's neighbourhoods. It's a unique performance tradition that adds music, choreography and clowns to the "foundation" texts, which are passed down orally. The clowns' performance is a playful element that, as usual, brings in different ways of contestation. Rui Arimateia, Coordinator of the Intangible Cultural Heritage Resource Centre in the municipality of Évora, believes that the many layers that intertwine in Brincas give them "another texture" and a unique depth. This performance tradition, deeply marked by orality and spanning the ages, is a unique manifestation of the Alentejo's rich and intrinsically "poetic" popular culture. As an identity practice, Brincas are an example of a cultural expression that should be understood, researched and preserved. This is a goal to which Évora_ 27 European Capital of Culture will commit.
